Transformative Leadership Workshop on Gender Equity, Diversity, and Inclusivity (GEDI) in Higher Education Institutions in Southeast Asia
24 - 25 October 2024 in
Bangkok, Thailand
We are thrilled to share the success of our recent workshop on 24 - 25 October 2024 in Bangkok at Hotel Novotel (Siam Square), where over 50 leaders and representatives gathered to champion Gender Equity, Diversity, and Inclusivity (GEDI) in Southeast Asian higher education!
Attendees were distinguished government representatives from Southeast Asia, including a Commissioner from the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) in the Philippines and the Director General of Higher Education and Science from Timor-Leste’s Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Culture. Also present were university leaders and representatives from 29 universities across Southeast Asia and the UK partners from six prominent universities: University of Oxford, University of the West of Scotland, Newcastle University, Heriot-Watt University, University of the West of England, and University College of Estate Management.
The two-day workshop was expertly facilitated by Dr. Lai Suat Yan, Coordinator of the Master of Gender Studies program at Universiti Malaya, and Ms. Liza Liew from Lead Women, Malaysia.
Our UK partners shared their impactful work on GEDI, exchanging ideas, strategies, and exploring opportunities for further collaboration to strengthen GEDI in Southeast Asian higher education. The workshop successfully fostered a vibrant GEDI network between Southeast Asian leaders and UK partners, paving the way for future initiatives.
Participants also gained insights from key Southeast Asian organisations dedicated to GEDI, as they shared about their works and GEDI insights into their ongoing projects in the region. These organisations included the Asian Institute of Technology (Gender and Development Studies), the Heinrich Böll Stiftung (Southeast Asia Regional Office), and Plan International.
The workshop concluded with a networking session between the UK and Southeast Asian institutions, strengthening partnerships that will drive transformative change in the region.
Thank you to all who contributed to making this workshop a success. We look forward to witnessing the meaningful outcomes of these collaborations!
