2nd Regional Leadership Forum and Workshop in Research Governance on Supporting Sustainable Research Ecosystems in Higher Education Institutions in the GMS and Timor-Leste

On 11-13 September 2023, 25 university leaders from the countries of the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS), including Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam and Timor-Leste actively participated in the 2nd Regional Leadership Forum and Workshop held in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. The Forum is a part of the 4-year Horizon Southeast Asia: Pushing the Frontiers of Research and Sustainability Project, co-organised by Osnabrück University of Applied Science, Germany and SEAMEO RIHED and funded by DAAD, aiming to support Sustainable Research Ecosystems in Higher Education Institutions in the GMS and Timor-Leste to generate relevant research impacts for the sustainable future of SEAMEO region by strengthening the research governance structures of the higher education institution.

Dr. Nguyễn Thu Thủy, Director General Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education and Training, Vietnam honourably delivered a welcoming and opening address. She mentioned the importance of research and leadership roles in higher education that are significant in developing the research ecosystem.

The university leaders in charge of research management and governance at their university collectively shared, engaged, and exchanged their knowledge on Leadership in Research and Research Management, the main focused themes of this year, at the university with the support of the regional project experts from Germany, Indonesia, and Malaysia.

This year, the Research Leadership towards SDGs workshop, one of the sessions in the Forum, was highlighted to raise awareness and understanding of sustainable development whereby the participants could interact with others in the form of gamification and reflect on applicable and practical approaches to how university leaders can play an important role in creating research ecosystems and cultures in their respective institutions. The university leaders also paid a visit to the University of Technology, Vietnam National University of Ho Chi Minh City (HCMUT) to learn about the impressive success of university research-industry management and cooperation as the lesson learned to possibly apply in their university context.
