A new project under SEAMEO RIHED’s Programme on Enhancing Capacities for Collective Learning and Continuous Development of Higher Education Institutions in the SEAMEO Region entitled “Horizon Southeast Asia: Pushing the Frontiers of Research and Sustainability, will bring together the countries of the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) and Timor Leste over the course of four years to develop sustainable research ecosystems and contribute to a more sustainable future in Southeast Asia.

The result of renewed collaboration between SEAMEO RIHED and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the project is being funded through the DAAD’s SDG-Partnership Programme from 2022-2025 and is being co-developed and co-implemented by Svay Rieng University, Cambodia, the National University of Laos, Lao PDR, East Yangon University, Myanmar, Mae Fah Luang University , Thailand, Universidade Nacional Timor Lorosa'e,Timor-Leste, Thuyloi University, Vietnam, the Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences, Germany, and SEAMEO RIHED.

The project has been designed around two key pillars:

  1. Research Governance, so as to strengthen the research governance structures of participating HEIs in the GMS and Timor Leste,
  2. Capacity Enhancement for Researchers, so as to foster joint-research collaboration through the development of new research programmes and projects in thematic areas concerning Sustainable Development.

Aware of the region’s needs for more sustainable research ecosystems and enhanced research capacity towards sustainable development, SEAMEO RIHED, in partnership with the Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences, is facilitating  the collaboration between 25 universities across the GMS and Timor-Leste through a series of planned activities aimed at both pillars of the project over the course of the next 4 years. These activities will include the DAAD-SEAMEO RIHED Research Leadership Excellence Programme for norminated research leaders in the GMS and Timor Leste to work with universities in Germany and the development of 3 collaborative regional research networks around the themes of climate change, collaborative river governance and management, and sustainable agricultural production.

To kick-off our new 4-year journey, SEAMEO RIHED is holding the Project Launch and Leadership Forum of Horizon Southeast Asia: Pushing the Frontiers of Research and Sustainability on 10 May 2022, online. The Project Launch will be livestream on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/seameo.rihed
