On 20-21 July 2018, SEAMEO RIHEDorganised the Kick-off of the Project on Support for Capacity Building of the Greater Mekong Sub-region University Consortium (GMS-UC) and the 1st Rectors Forum at the Sukosol Hotel in Bangkok, Thailand. This is the first activity of the Support for Capacity Building of the GMS-UC Project, being implemented by SEAMEO RIHED in collaboration with the ASEAN Secretariat under the framework of the Japan-ASEAN Integration Fund (JAIF). The project aimsto enhance capacities of selected universities of the GMS-UC across areas of management and leadership, teaching and research and internationalisation and cross-border education.

The GMS-UC 1st Rector Forum which aims to promote sharing of experiences and best practices among selected universities in the GMS and ASEAN member countries as well as to seek engagement of Presidents/Rectors on joint agreement on collaboration to enhance quality of institutional management and leadership in respective contexts which will lead to harmonisation of higher education in the region and beyond.

Our keynote address was delivered by Ms. Shannon Kalayanamitr, CEO of IKIGAI Group and UN Women HE for SHE advocate, on “Leading with a Future Mind”, identifying the emerging challenges and opportunities of higher education. From her dynamic experiences, Ms. Shannon shared her thoughts and ideas on how the global labor force is changing, what new skillset is emerging and the role of higher education also needs to be reinvented accordingly. The Forum continued with Pol. Lt. Col. Dr. NopdolThongnopnua’sfruitful workshops on the subjects of “Management Leadership” and “Strategic Planning Formulation”.Pol. Lt. Col. Dr. NopdolThongnopnua carried out a series of innovative training activities, including cross-generation discussion, SWOT analysis and ideas exhibition to engage participants into the flow of strategic planning process.

During the Forum, the delegates, leaders from GMS-UC universities, participated in in-depth discussions, good and bad practices sharing panel, as well as brainstorming activity on how to construct a strategic plan for each university of the consortium.

 

Leaders from Royal University of Phnom Penh, Cambodia; National University of Laos, Lao PDR;East Yangon University, Myanmar; Hue University, Vietnam; and Kasetsart University, Thailand, sharing successful and unsuccessful stories from respective institutions.

Moreover, the delegates agreed on reinforcing their commitment to the project by signing the “Joint Statement for the Project on Support for Capacity building of the Greater Mekong Sub-region University Consortium”. This is to ensure that action will be taken at institutional level alongside with the GMS-UC activities during the next two years.
