        On 3-4 September 2018, SEAMEO RIHED organised the Teaching and Research Capacity Development Workshop I: Identification of Challenges and Setting Development Goalat Mercure Vientiane Hotel in Vientiane, Lao PDR. This activity is a part of the Support for Capacity Building of the GMS-UC Project, being implemented by SEAMEO RIHED in collaboration with the ASEAN Secretariat under the framework of the Japan-ASEAN Integration Fund (JAIF). The project aims to enhance capacities of selected universities of the GMS-UC across areas of management and leadership, teaching, research, internationalisation and cross-border education.

The “Teaching and Research Capacity Development Workshop I: Identification of Challenges and Setting Development Goal” was held to reaffirm the role of university, as higher education and research institution. The Workshop provided the members of the GMS‐UC a platform to discuss about potentials and challenges of universities, to share best practices as well as to identify available resources, in order to set goals for teaching and research improvement.

SEAMEO RIHED was honored to welcome more than 60 representatives from GMS University Consortium, who are responsible for teaching/academic and research affairs, such as vice president, rector or provost responsible for teaching/education and research affairs, as well as representatives of 5 GMS-UC governments, to attend actively our fruitful training, sharing sessions, and discussions in institutional and national SWOP analysis of teaching and research activities.

Our sincere appreciation to Prof. Dr. Kazuo N. Watanabe from University of Tsukuba, Japan to deliver keynoteaddress on Research: “Educational Research at Higher Education: What are basic needs to start with?”, as well as to Assoc. Prof. Bundit Thipakorn from King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi, Thailand on Teaching: “The Future of Higher Education”.The participants were truly engaged in these two inspiring talks which explored fundamental role of a university as teaching and research institution, research and teaching management, as well as emerging trends of higher education in Southeast Asia and beyond.

Special thanks to our Guest of Honor, Prof Dr Saykhong, Director General of Higher Education, Ministry of Education and Sports, and our co-host, the National University of Laos. We are looking forward to welcoming all the representatives of GMS – University Consortium again at the next GMS-UC Project as Internationalisation and Cross-Border Education Workshop in October, in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
