Seminar on Internationalisation Management for Higher Education Institutions

SEAMEO RIHED organized a 1 day seminar on “Internationalisation Management for Higher Education Institutions” on 1 March 2013 at 5th floor conference room, the Office of the Higher Education Commission Building, Bangkok. The key objective of the seminar is to provide university executives, international relation officers, and persons working closely with international affairs with current issues and trends on internationalisation of higher education, best practices and lessons learned on internationalisation management, and training needs in support of internationalisation.

The key note speakers included 1) Assoc. There were totally 46 participants as a representative from the 19 Universities in Bangkok and other provinces. The seminar has been a platform for Thai higher education institutions to exchanges knowledge and practices on internationalisation with experts from Japan, Australia and Thailand.

Official visit to SEAMEO RIHED of the SEAMEO Council President

On 14 January 2013, the Minister of Education, Brunei Darussalam, and President of the SEAMEO Council, H.E. Pehin Abu Bakar Apong, completed an official visit to SEAMEO RIHED. Accompanied by Dr. Witaya Jeradechakul, the Director of SEAMEO Secretariat; Dr. Junaidi Abdul Rahman, the Permanent Secretary for Core Education, Ministry of Education, Brunei Darussalam; H.E. Dato Paduka Haji Kamis bin Haji Tamin, the Ambassador of Brunei Darussalam in Thailand; and other delegation members, his excellency remarked that he was impressed with the results of his visit to SEAMEO RIHED.

H.E. Pehin Abu Bakar Apong shared his ideas on the current trajectory of higher education in Southeast Asia. He emphasised that concern needs to be paid to the reform and future of education in the region, education in Asian countries has gradually improved to the point that western countries are taking notice and beginning now to invest in Southeast Asia.  With the strength of its programs supporting student mobility, a credit transfer system and quality assurance in higher education, H.E. Pehin Abu Bakar Apong firmly believes that SEAMEO RIHED can foster excellence and synergy in higher education for regional development.

M-I-T iAward Site-Visit Assessment 2012: Thailand

In close collaboration with the Office of the Higher Education Commission, Thailand, SEAMEO RIHED organised the third M-I-T iAward Site-Visit Assessment in Thailand during 25-27 September 2012, following previous assessments in Malaysia and Indonesia. To date, the full cycle of assessments for Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand has been completed.
The M-I-T iAward Assessment Committee comprises three experts representing each participating country and two further experts from selected regional organizations. The Assessment Committee performed site-visit assessments to the International Relations Offices (IROs) of three nominated universities in Thailand,  namely: Thammasart University, Kasetsart University, and Mae Fah Luang University. The assessment feedback produced by the Committee has been compiled and will be submitted to each nominated university upon announcement of the results.
An awarding ceremony of the M-I-T iAward is to be held at the 47th SEAMEO Council Conference in 2013. The ceremony will recognise the outstanding contribution of International Relations Offices (IROs) to facilitate, support and promote student mobility in Southeast Asian countries. The M-I-T iAward will thus serve to recognize and promote good practices among IROs. In conjunction with the focus on IROs, there will also be a pilot training programme for IRO Officers beginning in 2013. More information on the iAward Programme and IRO Training is soon to follow.

The 6th SEAMEO RIHED Study Visit Programme on University Research Management in the UK: Learn Best Practices at the World-class Universities

The 6th SEAMEO RIHED Study Visit Programme on University Research Management in the UK: Learn Best Practices at the World-class Universities is scheduled to be held during 14-21 October 2012. Higher education policy makers from government agencies and university executives in Southeast Asian countries are warmly welcomed to join in the study visit programme.
The Study Visit Programme aims to empower higher education institutions in a globalised education world and enhance harmonised atmosphere of diverse higher education system in the region. After the programme, the participants would gain an insight view on the provided topics to enhance the universities’ management and development. Networks between regional universities and UK universities and among regional universities will serve as a platform for further communication and potential collaboration. Apart from that, the programme will also contribute to strength univerisities’ competitiveness and reputation in a transforming decade in Southeast Asia and around the world.
Participants will be provided with opportunities to attend series of lectures on various topics in the University of Oxford, University of Warwick (tentative), University of Birmingham (tentative), University College Birmingham (tentative) and government agencies. The lectures and discussion topics will be focusing on:
– Innovation and Research is essential for strengthening universities’ competitiveness
– Inter-disciplinary research which could strengthening university research capacity and capability
– Research funding options and new revenue stream in the UK universities
– Research linkage between higher education institutions and industrial sector including commercialising university research

In close collaboration with the Directorate General of Higher Education, Ministry of Education and Culture, Indonesia, SEAMEO RIHED organised the second round of the M-I-T iAward Site-Visit Assessment in Indonesia during 25-27 June after the completion of the first round in Malaysia last month.

In an effort to recognise good practices and celebrate outstanding contribution of International Relations Office (IROs) to student mobility services, SEAMEO RIHED has proposed and developed a new initiative of Malaysia-Indonesia-Thailand Internationalisation Award (M-I-T iAward) since 2011 for the pilot implementation in Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand. The M-I-T iAward Committee Members comprising three experts representing each participating country and the other two experts from selected regional organisations performed the site-visit assessment at three nominated universities in Indonesia, namely Sebelas Maret University, Bina Nusantara (Binus) University, and Sriwijaya University. The assessment feedback made by the Committee has been complied and will be submitted to each nominated university upon result announcement.

The assessment results of awarded IROs will be officially notified upon completion of site-visit assessments to all the three participating countries, namely Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand. The full cycle of assessment is tentatively scheduled to be completed in October 2012.

Contestant Invitation for the ASEAN Education Challenge 2012

The SEAMEO Secretariat in collaboration with the Office of Private of Education Commission (OPEC), Chiang Mai province and the Association of Private Schools Chiang Mai (APSC) is organizing a 3-day ASEAN Education Challenge 2012 (AEC 2012) in Chiang Mai on 25-27 August 2012 at the Chiang Mai University Hall, Chiang Mai, Thailand.

The event aims to provide the platform for both students and teachers from across Southeast Asian Countries, to share their perspectives with the express intention of harmonizing the myriad of cultures. A wide range of students from 10 SEAMEO member countries are invited to showcase their unique skills and talents for the following categories of contest:

Summary of The M-I-T iAward Site-Visit Assessment in Malaysia on 10-11 May 2012

The M-I-T iAward site-visit assessment in Malaysia was held on 10-11 May 2012 at Universiti Malaya (UM) and Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), two nominated universities from Malaysia. The site-visit assessment was performed by five assessors comprising three experts representing Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand, and two others from selected regional organisations. The assessment feedback made by the iAward Assessment Committee has been complied and will be submitted to each nominated university upon result announcement.
